The Story Behind Katoosh™
Every great company has a story. Ours began with a yacht, a name that stayed with me, and the kind of curiosity that has shaped every chapter of my life.
Where the Name Came From
Every great company has a story, and people often ask me where the name Katoosh™ came from. The truth is, it did not come from a branding agency, a marketing consultant, or a brainstorming session. It began years ago during my time working in the yachting industry.
A close friend of mine, Tom, was a yacht captain working for telecommunications entrepreneur Craig McCaw. Craig owned a yacht called Tatoosh, and I always thought it was one of the most distinctive names I had ever heard. It was short, memorable, and had a unique sound that stayed with me for years.
When I eventually decided to start my own company, I wanted a name that had the same kind of impact. Naturally, my first thought was Tatoosh, but when I checked, the domain name had already been taken. Rather than giving up, I kept the part of the name I liked most — the ending, “oosh” — and started working my way through the alphabet.
It sounded original, memorable, and different. Better still, when I searched for the domain name, it was available. I registered it immediately, and Katoosh was born.
A Name With a Remarkable Backstory
Looking back, it is interesting how much history surrounds the original inspiration. The yacht Tatoosh later became one of the world’s most famous superyachts, owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen before eventually becoming part of the fleet of the President of the United Arab Emirates.
Craig McCaw himself built one of the most successful telecommunications companies in history before selling McCaw Cellular to AT&T in a deal worth approximately $12 billion.
Those achievements had nothing to do with my company, of course, but they reinforce something I have believed throughout my career: great opportunities often begin with a single idea, a conversation, or simply being curious enough to notice something that others overlook.
Curiosity Has Always Opened the Next Door
That philosophy has shaped every stage of my life. From growing up in Africa and serving in the South African military, to crossing the Atlantic as a yacht captain, managing Hall & Oates, building websites before Google became a household name, and now helping businesses prepare for the age of artificial intelligence, one thing has remained constant: curiosity has always opened the next door.
Today, Katoosh is far more than a web design company. We help businesses become visible where it matters most. We build AI-ready websites, develop SEO and Answer Engine Optimization strategies, implement advanced Schema markup, create authority-building content, automate marketing workflows, and design custom AI systems that help businesses work smarter and grow faster.
Technology changes, but our mission remains the same — to help our clients stay ahead of the curve rather than chasing it.
The Other Meaning of Katoosh
There is another interesting twist to the story. In Hawaiian sports broadcasting, legendary commentator Larry Price popularized the word “Katoosh!” as the sound of a crushing tackle or a game-changing play. It became synonymous with making a decisive impact. I did not know that when I chose the name, but I could not have asked for a better fit.
That is exactly what we strive to do for every client we work with. We do not just build websites or create marketing campaigns. We help businesses make an impact, stand out from the competition, and embrace the future with confidence.
The name Katoosh may have started with a yacht and a little curiosity, but over the years it has come to represent innovation, resilience, creativity, and a willingness to explore new ideas. Those values continue to guide everything we do.
