Craftsmanship meets practical AI

From a Johannesburg schoolyard to an AI-powered leather sofa showroom

How a friendship spanning more than five decades helped The Leather Sofa Company and Katoosh create a clearer way for customers to explore leather, furniture and room possibilities before a sofa is built.

A 50-year connection

Two school friends. Two very different careers. One useful idea.

More than 50 years ago, Mitch Lurie and Russell Tayler were schoolboys at Highlands North Boys’ High School in Johannesburg. Neither could have imagined that their paths would cross again through custom furniture and artificial intelligence.

Mitch and his wife, DeAnn, went on to build The Leather Sofa Company, a family-owned Texas manufacturer. Russell founded Katoosh, helping businesses use digital marketing and AI in practical, task-focused ways.

The idea was simple: help a customer see the sofa they are considering before the first piece of leather is cut.

The customer challenge

Custom furniture asks people to imagine what does not yet exist

A shopper may love the shape of one sofa, prefer a leather shown on a small swatch and wonder how the finished piece will look at home. AI-assisted visualization can make that conversation clearer.

See the same sofa in another leather

A company-specific visualizer can begin with an approved product photograph and apply a selected finish while preserving the sofa’s recognizable proportions, cushions, seams, arms and overall construction.

Place the furniture in the customer’s room

A room photograph and an approved furniture image can be combined to create a planning concept—useful for comparing styles, colors, sectionals, chairs or ottomans with other decision-makers.

Turn factory photos into virtual showrooms

An approved photograph taken on a factory floor can be presented in a cleaner studio, Dallas living room, library, penthouse or coastal setting—without quietly redesigning the actual furniture.

See the workflow in action

From a different leather finish to a completely reimagined room

These before-and-after examples show the practical purpose of the custom ChatGPT workflow: begin with an approved photograph, preserve the recognizable furniture and create a clearer visual reference for the customer.

Important: These are visual planning concepts. Final leather color, scale, dimensions and construction details should always be confirmed against physical swatches and official product specifications.

Example one

The same sofa, visualized in another leather

The original photograph provides the people, pose, sofa shape, cushions, arms and detailing. The AI-assisted version changes the upholstery finish while keeping the scene recognizable.

Example two

A customer’s room, shown with the selected sofa

The room photograph establishes the setting. The second image presents a concept of how a different leather sofa could look in that environment, giving the customer a more useful reference than a swatch and memory alone.

Craftsmanship remains the anchor

AI helps people explore choices. Skilled hands still build the furniture.

The physical sofa is still designed, cut, sewn, assembled and upholstered by experienced craftspeople in Lewisville, Texas. AI does not replace the comfort, character or durability created in the factory.

Its role is earlier in the journey: helping customers picture options, helping salespeople explain them and helping the company make more use of strong, approved photography.

01

Preserve the real product

Do not alter construction details or show features the factory will not build.

02

Treat concepts as planning aids

Customers should still confirm dimensions, access, specifications and final leather selections.

03

Keep a human in the loop

Every image should be compared with the approved product and reviewed before it is shared.

Questions customers may ask

AI furniture visualization, explained plainly

What is AI furniture visualization?

It uses approved product photographs and reference information to create concept images showing furniture in different finishes, colors or room settings.

Can a customer see a sofa in a photograph of their living room?

Yes, as a visual planning aid. It does not replace checking furniture dimensions, room measurements, doorway access or other physical specifications.

Should the final leather choice be made from a screen image?

No. Photography, lighting, screen settings and AI interpretation can affect color. A physical leather swatch remains the best final material reference.

Does AI build or redesign the furniture?

No. The furniture is handcrafted by The Leather Sofa Company. AI supports visualization and presentation; the approved product specifications remain the source of truth.
